Songwriting…

My brother is a singer and he needs some songs written but he doesn’t know how to write them. He also writes poetry. I told him that poetry and songwriting go hand in hand. He doesn’t know how to turn them into songs, he says. So he’s asked me to write songs for him as a ghostwriter. I’ve got 3 and a few more in the works so far. He wants to know what tune I want to use for them. I have no idea. I just like to write, but tonight while writing a song I was humming to it and I’m not sure if it’s because I had been listening to music earlier and just had a tune in my head or if I actually have an original tune for said song.

I am enjoying this side of my creativity. I had never thought I’d be songwriting. It is fun while also being emotional.

Do any of my readers write songs?

I'm a student studying fine arts and creative writing. I love photography and I like putting short stories to pictures. I may also blog about personal schtuff! Just trying to get the hang of putting endless thoughts into understandable words. I'm a homeschooling mom of boys and wife to a retired combat veteran and within my writings you will find a little bit of everything. I'll share my thoughts and opinions, maybe some read worthy rants and recipes! So if you'd like to read about my random rambles grab your favorite liquid or snack, kick off your shoes (safely), have a seat and enjoy!

  1. I used to write song lyrics, but never wrote out the instrumental parts. That’s mainly because I used to write songs in the tune of other songs. I’ve tried writing instrumentals to songs that don’t have lyrics, but those accidentally got thrown away years ago.

  2. Hello this is B. My partner responded. I do write lyrics they are on our blog and also on ASCAP. Throughout the years I have studied the structure of lyrics. Verses, Chorus/hook, bridge and rhyme patterns. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

  3. Yes. My blog partner B writes lyrics not the music. I did a collaboration with him once. Then did one on my own as a writing challenge.

You’re right, it is a lot like poetry. When I’m writing I’m hearing a melody in my head, but then I have to reread it without the melody since the reader won’t know a melody unless I’ve attached one.

For me that’s the only complicated part… Having what I hear in my head flow the same way when it’s read.

Best wishes with your songwriting! ☺
